Creating a Home Gym

by admin

I’ve recently been piecing together a home gym in my basement. I came across this article by Stephanie Foster and found it to be helpful.

One of the big reasons people don’t like to have a home gym is the expense. Treadmills and other large equipment cost a lot and take up tons of space. Then you feel guilty as you use it as a place to store clothes rather than exercise with it.

This is a mistake that results from trying to make your home gym look like one you might join. There’s nothing wrong with wanting that kind of equipment, so long as you are sure you will really get good use out of it.

For the rest of us, a simpler home gym is more affordable, more fun and more likely to be used.

A exercise ball, for example, can be kept in the living room, and used as you watch television. If you have kids you don’t have to worry about it pinching fingers, and they’ll probably think it is loads of fun to play with. And if it’s just you at home, you don’t have to worry about it attracting clutter. A ball is a terrible place to store things.

Dumbbells and resistance bands are also great alternatives for your home gym. These are quite inexpensive, and you can have a small selection without taking up a ton of space. But if you don’t want to buy weights, you can find things to lift around the house. They may not be perfectly designed for your routine, however, and experimentation may be required to get things going at the level you would like to work out at.

You can often find perfectly good home gym equipment at garage sales. This is great if you do want to have a larger piece of equipment. You can buy them new if you like, but since many people fail to make good use of the equipment they buy, you can often find it in excellent condition for far less.

If you enjoy aerobics, an aerobic step can be a great investment. It’s easy to put away under a bed, and a great way to make your aerobic workout more challenging.

A mini stair stepper can be a good choice, so long as you get a good quality one. Many come with handles so that you can involve your entire body, not just your legs. Once again, these are generally small enough you can store them out of the way with ease, or have them in whichever part of the house you would like to workout in on a particular day.

The key to a successful home gym is that it works with what you will do for exercise. If you aren’t really going to use it, even cheap exercise equipment probably isn’t worth the money. Take your time and be sure.

Exhaustion and Anxiety

I’ve been experiencing increased anxiety symptoms lately and this article by Barry Joe McDonagh really hit home for me.

Why do some people have a problem with anxiety and others do not?

This is a question almost everyone who experiences anxiety asks themselves at some point or another. Why me?

My understanding of anxiety is that yes, some people seem more susceptible than others but that the key trigger tends to be exhaustion. By exhaustion I mean mental, physical, or emotional exhaustion. (Under physical exhaustion I also include things like diet or substance abuse)

For some it may be exhaustion caused by a hectic life and never taking time to release the stress. People like that often do not notice their stress levels are so high until they get blindsided by a spontaneous panic attack.

For others it may be an emotional exhaustion caused by the loss of a loved one or the break up of a long term relationship.

If the anxiety is caused by a traumatic life event it is interesting to note that the person frequently does not experience the anxiety until the event has passed.

You often see people dealing very well with a crisis but then several weeks later when the dust has settled they start to feel the anxiety. It is like they have been in shock and are only now starting to process the experience.

The most important thing to remember about panic attacks or general anxiety is that help is available and it is important to get help sooner rather than later.

I always recommend visiting your doctor first of all to really determine that it is just anxiety you are dealing with and not an underlying physical ailment. Once you are sure that it is anxiety that you dealing with, treat it.

Don’t wait

Burying your head in the sand hoping it will simply be gone next week is not an effective way to treat it. It is totally unnecessary to spend months if not years dealing with something that can be corrected now.

That help is available right here.

The Panic Away Program changes the way you process your anxiety enabling you to end panic attacks and general anxiety. It costs no more than a dinner for two but can change your life so much for the better. Invest in the right kind of information. Information that puts you back in control of your life. That is the best kind of investment you can make.

Yoga Your Stress Away

by admin

There is no denying the fact that yoga has a beneficial impact on the body, but where should you start in order to get the most for your mind?  Whether you’re thinking about Yoga for losing or maintaining weight, or to improve your emotional and mental health, it is important to consider which type of Yoga fits you the best.  The following description by James Pendergraft goes over three types of Yoga specifically relating to women, but it really applies to anyone looking to start:

Yoga Styles:

1)Vini Yoga. This is a personal practice that could be developed through the incorporation of meditation, proper breathing, and posture as well as prayer and rituals. The amount of all these aspects that could be incorporated into your yoga practice will have to be changed though as a woman and her needs change and develop. Therefore, if you are still a student or a young professional, then the physical aspects of yoga might be more important for you, while older women might focus more on the spiritual, mental, and emotional aspects.

2)Ashtanga Yoga. Also considered as the power yoga, this style is known to be flowing and athletic. Breathing is very important in this yoga style as a woman flows through a series of postures. This is able to generate a lot of sweat and body heat, thus helping women detoxify their bodies.

3)Ananda Yoga. This yoga style makes use of temperate poses. This is gently meditative and perfect for those who would like to practice a yoga style that helps them to look inwards so they can focus on making their emotions better.

I’ve been using Yoga to help slow down in an otherwise fast paced lifestyle and it has been very successful.  What are you experiences with Yoga as stress relief?

Vegetable Stir-Fry Recipe

by admin

Here’s a quick, easy, and healthy vegetable stir-fry recipe that can be made into a meal:

Prep Time: ~10 minutes
Cook Time: ~10 minutes

Ingredients:

* 3 tbsp olive oil
* 8 baby onions, halved
* 1 eggplant, cubed
* 8 ounces zucchini, sliced
* 8 ounces open-cap mushrooms (or 5-6 shiitake mushrooms), halved
* 2 gloves garlic, crushed
* 14 ounce can chopped tomatoes
* 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato paste
* ground black pepper
* fresh basil leaves

Preparation:

1. Start by heating the olive oil in a large preheated wok. (If you’re a vegetarian, a Wok is a must have!)
2. Add the baby onions and eggplant to the wok and stir-fry for about 5 minutes. The vegetables should start to soften.
3. Add the zucchini, mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes, and tomato paste to the wok and stir-fry for about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
4. Season with the ground black pepper and garnish with fresh basil.

To turn this into a nice filling main meal, you can add bean curd or tofu!
